Contexts is excited to announce the launch of Contexts Blogs: a community of sociology blogs that has the potential to take the Contexts mission to a new level. Contexts, with its tradition of bringing sociology and the public sphere together, is an ideal host for a new experiment in online scholarship and community.
With the internet we can provide rapid, timely, and varied commentary on current events. It also provides a forum for community-building, both within the discipline as well as with sociologists and other communities of scholars, journalists, policy makers, and the general public.
Want to blog for Contexts?
Over the course of 2008 we plan to rollout many more blogs that reflect the depth and breadth of our discipline. Here's what we're looking for:
- We want blogs that bring sociological theory and research to bear on life in today's world.
- We want blogs to do this in an accessible manner that appeals to generalists within our discipline and to educated publics such as students, policymakers, and the media.
- We want blog authors who are committed to their blogs for the long haul.
If you have an idea for a Contexts Blog and believe you'd make a good blogger, let us know:

contexts.org/socimages Contexts is thrilled to announce that the great blog, Sociological Images, has joined the community at contexts.org. Sociological Images, run by Lisa Wade and Gwen Sharp, is visual sociology at its best: finding images and videos hungry for sociological analysis and perfect for classroom use.
contexts.org/crawler There's a lot of great sociology out there, but finding it all can be difficult. That's where the Contexts Crawler comes in. Under the guidance of Amelia Cotton Corl, the Crawler scans the internet for media reports and other insights offered by sociologists and serves them up in a concise, snappy style.
contexts.org/monte Monte Bute is a backstage sociologist. From his roundabout journey from Red Wing Boy's Reformatory to anti-war activist to his current position as sociology gadfly professor at Metropolitan State University in the Twin Cities. Monte's full of great stories, creative insights and powerful critiques—and now he has a blog!
contexts.org/discoveries The Discoveries section of the print magazine is one of our most popular features. The Discoveries Blog brings everything you love about Discoveries to the web. You'll find short, frequent blog postings highlighting great research as we find it.
