About

This blog is an extension of the Discoveries feature in Contexts Magazine.

You know the Beatles album Let It Be…Naked? It’s the Let It Be album stripped down to the core performances: overdubs, edits and effects are thrown out and it’s just the Beatles…naked. This blog is sort of like Discoveries…naked.

The Discoveries section of Contexts, written each issue by the Contexts graduate student board, is one of our most popular features. We offer short, snappy overviews of recently published sociological research. But while these may read nice and easy, writing them is another story. Each Discovery goes through an extensive collaborative editing process and for every article highlighted in the print magazine, dozens of solid articles get passed over.

This blog is a peek behind the curtain at the process of discovering Discoveries. Internally, this blog is basically used for brainstorming purposes: whenever one of us finds a notable article that may deserve attention in Contexts, we’ll publish a short summary here along with a link to the article and the author’s website. For each issue, we’ll take the best and develop them into full-fledged Discoveries.

We could keep this process private, but we thought it’d be fun to open it up to the public. Like we said, it’s a real chore to whittle down a massive list of impressive articles to fit on a few pages in print, and this blog gives us a chance to highlight more of this research.

So if you like Discoveries in print, you’ll probably love Discoveries online. Feel free to comment on the articles we blog about here and to suggest other articles we might have missed!
