I dissent. Historically, "free thinkers" constitute an orthodoxy - "a philosophical viewpoint that holds that beliefs should be formed on the basis of science and logic and should not be be influenced by emotion, authority, tradition, or any dogma." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_thought . The movement is primarily anti-religious. A true "free thinker" is not a joiner. He or she is a Socrates. Why didn't Professor Bute define the "ancient party" that he invites his readers to join?

Anna,
I'm sorry to hear that the campaign remains so stubbornly bull-headed.
This has become a national issue, see these links:

I would encourage you and other frustrated supporters to write letters to the editor, call your state and national Obama office to complain, and get your friends and neighbors to do the same.

Good Luck,
Monte

I went to our local democratic office to get a couple of lawn signs to put up in our front lawn. We live on a busy corner and I wanted to show support for the canidate I would like to see win the election. I was shocked to find that I would have to pay for any of the Obama campaign material. If a some one wanted to advertise on my property I figure they should pay me not me pay them.
I refused to pay and so obama goes un represented in my neighborhood where there are mccain signs up in yards.

As usual, Monte, you hit the nail on the head. We need those free-thinking people to get this country out of the stagnancy that it is in and onto the road to recovery. Let's hope it happens...

Monte,

I certainly agree that people around the world would describe the States as a empire. There is not a strong argument that the United States is not. In fact, my limited understanding of U.S. foreign policy is that international aggression and competition with other empires for influence and the securing of resources. This has been the case since the original rebellion to flee the rule of the British, through the conquest of North America, to the take over of the Philippines, Cuba, Hawaii, and the invasion of Indochina and Iraq. The fight for "freedom and democracy" has been a public relations slogan to win over citizens of the empire. I'm sure you know all this 10 times more than myself.
Now what I am interested in is idea of citizens in historical empires being unaware or in denial about the empires in which they lived. It seems to me, and I might be way off on a limb, that the British and Romans celebrated the fact they were empires. What do you know about this?

My favorite confrontational novel of the year is Maria McCann's As Meat Loves Salt. It was published a couple of years ago, but I didn't read it until this year. It's about a deeply flawed young man who stumbles into Cromwell's army during the English Civil War and discovers both a brutality beyond his own and a person he cares enough about to try to become a better person. I've posted a review of it at my Historical Novels website: www.HistoricalNovels.info/As-Meat-Loves-Salt.
