Jessica S. sent us a link to a set of mock ads based on these Canadian Club ads made by various contributors and found at Michelle Schwartz’s blog (along with others). They starkly reveal the double standard manifest in the original ads. The degree to which they are surprising, also, reveals how infrequently we see images in which women are shown as empowered, or even as individuals with their own desires (for something other than attention from a man for their appearance, that is). At the end are a couple made with alternative images of masculinity too.
Alternative images of masculinity:

Those are fun ads, but why couldn’t my mom have been a Canadian Club drinker? Nothing wrong with Canadian Club…
It should be noted that Canadian Club tastes like a bucket of rancid mud filtered through a lumberjack’s sock and sweetened with molasses.
while i can kindof see the mom ads selling power, i think the last two really point out the exclusive view of masculinity used in advertising….the only thing i really don’t like is that the new “your mom was not your dad’s first” is much more graphic than the original. it kind of shows homosexuality as something pornographic, fetishy and exclusively erotic–the parody would have been more effective if it had, like the original, showed men flirting and holding hands and maybe one picture of men kissing.
I agree with yummytummy, I mean, what’s the point of going outside the original idea and suggest that your mom’s first was another mom?
Also, as the pendulum swings, this is just another exaggeration. I know it is supposed to mock the other ads, which I really liked, and they are more appealing. But, the only one that really makes a positive apportation is the last one.
