Here are a couple recent sightings from the campaign trail…

First, we have a box of waffles sold at the recent Values Voter Summit (see also this AP article).

According to the website, the product is satirical. While I can see that the “waffle” idea is certainly political satire (the website has Kerry saying “I know a thing or two about wafflin’ and I approve this mix”) the Aunt Jemima styling of the box doesn’t seem very satirical to me. Racist would be a better word for it. And I think it is interesting that the spokesperson character Obama is sitting in for on this box is female (Aunt Jemima)– suggesting he may not be “masculine enough” to be president.

Here are some past Aunt Jemima ads for comparison. While looking for these I also found a great slideshow and article about the history of racist spokespersons.

NEW! And here’s the American News Project interviewing the creators of Obama Waffles at the Values Voters Summit. You can listen to their justifications for their “political satire” [Aunt Jemima reference? "We didn't think about that!"] and see more details of the front, back and sides of Obama Waffles packaging.  Since I’m having trouble embedding this clip, please take the link to see the interview.
