I recently heard that Marlboros were originally marketed to women. Amy L. sent in these examples from the 1950s (found here). She writes:
Notice how “in one picture the baby actually asks mom to have a cigarette instead of scolding him. It plays up the women-as-hysterical stereotype and also shows changing expectations about good motherhood.”

Well, I don’t think so, how is possible that a baby had been used to this kind of porpaganda?
¿¿ Malboro ?? ¿Ni siquiera sabes escribir algo que copias directamente?
Well I’ve never smoked in my life, but these ads are making me think I’m missing some crucial tool in the mommy kit…. was I supposed to be smoking instead of sucking on Starbucks drinks all day long? Why didn’t I get that memo?
We found the “Before you scold me” one in a book of ads from the 1950’s and immediately put it on a shirt for our infant daughter. When we were in public, I would watch people read the text and then look confused.

[...] I had no idea that Marlboros were originally marketed to women, but it appears so. From the Sociological Images blog: “Notice how in one picture the baby actually asks mom to have a cigarette instead of scolding him. It plays up the women-as-hysterical stereotype and also shows changing expectations about good motherhood..” Who knew that the Marlboro Man had a thing for MILKCs (Mothers I’d Like to Kill with Cancer)? [...] In a pretty hip move, the American Legion has put a bunch of scans of vintage posters on line. I think that poster at left should be put back into production to get people to carpool a little. Just replace “Hitler” with “Halliburton”, and it’s good to go. There are literally hundreds of them, including gems like Housewives! SAVE WASTE FATS FOR EXPLOSIVES! Take them to your meat dealer. Or this one, showing three fists holding wrenches and guns to the sky and thanking God for being on our side. Grow Your Own BE SURE! has obvious Photoshop potential , as does this one, which is one finger away from being hilarious. On that note, save yourself the trouble; FreakingNews.com has a bunch here, and there was already a worth1000 contest. A little unrelated, but amusing: Marlboros for Mommies. [...]
