My Sis, Keely W., alerted me to these “high tide heels” (pics found here and here). Apparently they were designed by Lisa Carney for a fashion show, but there has been some demand. I do not know if they are in production or not.
What’s the sociological import? Oh I don’t know. How about the requirement that women do femininity at all costs and at all times? The bizarreness of the fashion industry? Come on, ya’ll, I know you can come up with something good.

this is one of the silliest things i’ve ever seen.
really.
i can’t see any reason to come up with this but the simple fact that people like doing things just because they can, without any rationale.
the only plausible reason for these is to use them as a bizarre prop in a swimsuit catwalk…

I’m just picturing someone trying to walk on sand with those monstrosities on…
Okay, okay, they aren’t that bad. At least you can defend yourself from sharks with those heels. Or open oysters with them, too. Totally practical.
Funny. The first thing that sprang to my mind was “Katrina satire”.
There’s a store near my house that sells work shoes and boots, and they stock a few pairs of steel-toed high heels. You know, for construction sites! (I wish I had a link to offer, or thought to take a pic when I saw them)
I suppose the high-tide heels could be for the female (and I suppose a few male) SCBUA divers who like to go straight from the reef to the nightclub. Or maybe they’d work as part of an Aquawoman or Aquadragqueen costume for Halloween. Or something.
Of socialogical import? I wouls say they point out how even when doing something that should be gender neutral like scuba diving women are expected to be sexy.
