This kind of reminds me of a trend I’ve noticed in Sci Fi shows lately. There is this whole concept of extremly sexy “machine women”.
Like Six on Battle Star Galactica or Seven of Nine on Star Trek.
Both of these “women” have names that are simply numerical designations. Which serves to dehumanize them. And both of these characters are basically extremely “sexy” machines.
Six is even a little “over sexed” if you ask me. I think this appeals to a certain desire that men (especially the nerdy kinds of guys who watch Sci Fi TV shows) to have a woman they can “understand”, “program” and “codify”.
Not to generalize here ,because the same can be said for men I’m sure. But I work at a Video GAme Publisher with 200 lonely nerds and if it’s one thing they can agree on, women in thier lives are a lot harder to understand and control than computer programs.
i guess you could extend this metahpor out to sexualized video game characters like Bloodrayne, Ivy, and Lara Croft who are all highly sexualized characters who you DIRECTLY control.
There’s also a big sub genre of Anime that is related to the “Sexy ” doll. Sort of an extremely sexy doll who is innocently unaware of their own sexuality and yet disgustingly enamoured of one “lucky” guy.
But this image. Hmmm. Based on the controler this woman is “made” by Sony which would mean that she would probably be over priced and require constant patching. Anyone ever see this video which sort of plays on the same idea:
[...] This image, of a scantily clad woman attached to a video game controller with the caption “Keep on dreaming of a better world,” was posted without comment at Sociological Images. [...]
[...] (Original image pulled from Sociological Images) [...]
As if anyone who has dreams like that would even know how to push those buttons if they had the chance…
Some more nonsense: If you are literally in total control of your ‘partner,’ isn’t it still just masturbation? And where or how does ‘teledildonics’ fit into this context? It’s related, or can be, because with that stuff (As I understand it) you get a real live person to push your buttons, most likely remotely via the internet. What happens to our culture when people are having sex with robots that are being remotely controlled by other people? Facebook will never be the same, that’s for sure.
Jesus!
Who thinks of these ads?
I would be more outraged if I weren’t so taken aback by the utter lack of imagination on the part of the ad departments. Are they really so creatively challenged (or lazy) that they’ve contented themselves with using female bodies (obvious, obvious, obvious – done, done, done by agencies for decades) to sell things rather than pushing themselves professionally and looking for innovative ways to appeal to their target consumer?
They should be embarrassed by their own inability (or unwillingness) to try something new, and to communicate to a consumer base that is no longer in the same place it was in 1945. We expect, and deserve, more. It’s unfortunate that they’re so ill-equipped to deliver.
Ryan: in the interest of fairness, Six refers to that particular line of Cylons, and the particular one that has the biggest role does have a name, Caprica. I do agree that Caprica was over-sexed almost to the point of being a parody, but I think that is being toned down in the later seasons. Otherwise I agree wholeheartedly with your comment.
