I’m sorry, but they do not. They represent the worldwide appreciation of and mourning for a musical genius who happened to be American.
And who might have also been a child molester.
@ Trabb’s Boy: When was the last time the reversedhappened on this scale, Westerners mourning the passing of a non-Western musical genius? Michael Jackson was a highly exceptional person, but his international fame was made possible by a global media culture where Western, and particularly American, stars are dominant. Jackson was an extremely unique figure but he is not by far the only example of this.
As much as Michael Jackson has given to the musical and dance industry, I still think it is sad that he gets so much attention and respect when he is dead (much more respect than these last years living…) while many people who spend their lifetime helping others and saving millions of lives barely get noticed, just because their career isn’t as commercially based.
globalization of american culture? come on, give me a break, part of the reason his career was unique is because he really strove to reach out to the whole world in a way that other people didn’t before his time. even if that point is debatable, i still think it’s wonderful when an artist can reach people across cultural boundaries.
No wonder the world has such notions about African Americans.
Incidentally, I thought the post on “pan-ethnic” labels was also good, but I don’t know what else to call him.
Correction:
No wonder the world has such weird ideas about African Americans.
it is so sad to hear that michael jackson is dead me and my family miss him.
Was the world-wide reaction to the death of Princess Di an example of the globalization of the British culture?
[...] in non reproductive health news, Michael Jackson passed away on Friday. Sociological Images has a great gallery of the singer’s impact all over the world that’s definitely worth checking [...]

This is not white or black issue. It’s clear that Michael Jackson was created by American media and music industry. But it also should be taken into consideration that MJ was not an ordinary person…. This discussion goes to classical conflict between cultural industry and popular culture approaches. I’m sure that this is not true place to pursue that discussion….
