No offense, but Ryan, you’re just another infection deepening making worse the wound (of people) against fat acceptance. You talk a great deal about how losing weight is “SOOOOOOOOOOOO AWEEEEESUMMMMM” and how “I LOST 50 POUNDS – YOU CAN DO IT, TOO!” but don’t seem to really grasp that not everybody wants to be like you. There are plenty of other sites with plenty of other discussions that will cheerlead you on – OBVIOUSLY, this is not one of them. Push.on.out!
I find them to leave a lot to be desired. Yes! Let’s be positive about our bodies, but not anyone that’s smaller than a 14/16!

I’ll never understand butthurt about fat-acceptance. You obviously don’t have it very hard being thin.
You have no idea who I am. I have spent the last 2 years working my ass off (literally) to get to a size 8/10.
That’s after 28 years of being overweight.
Oh and just so it’s clarified, I lost 110lbs over those 2 years.
Counted calories, and lifted weights until a car accident made it so I couldn’t be physically active, and with counting calories, I’m still losing weight.
Right.
So I’m probably safe in assuming you were singing the exact opposite of this tune before you lost the weight? Please prove me wrong.

@Klipse: Wow. That’s kinda snarky. If you think anything over a size 2 is classified as “thin” in advertising, you’re out of your freakin’ mind. I feel like Sparrow is right in saying that there’s no middle-ground for anyone between 4 and 14, maybe overweight, but maybe not ‘obese.’ I don’t see that as fat-hate. In fact, I think your pure blindness to this missing demographic shows your own privileges, as well.

The privilege that comes with larger fat women being the sole subject of the ‘real’ fat acceptance movements, when you yourself just regarded anything smaller than 14/16 as “thin” (via assuming that Sparrow was thin). You don’t know these commenters personally, nor our stories. Nobody made an inference about you or your personal situation based on your comments, and it was unnecessary.
While people rail against fatness and fat people become offended saying “Oh, you don’t know me and my scenario,” (which is legitimate), a supposedly-thin-by-your-standards-but-bigger-than-adverts person who expresses his/her marginalization isn’t worthy of that same defense? It’s completely ludicrous. It’s just another double standard.
So yes, the fact that an entire section (dare I say, a quite LARGE section) of the population who are between ‘waif’ and ‘obese’ are completely ignored by you and media is a privilege you have exposed because you are recognized, they are not, and you don’t even acknowledge their existence (and clearly still choose to exhibit willful ignorance even in light of that demonstration).

Anyway, I think the lady’s point is that… everyone on that fat page is very large. There are people who are considered fat who are not as big as that and they are not represented on that fat-acceptance page.
Precisely…it’s under-representation of people who are classified as “fat” by the media, and “thin” by fat acceptance people.

Okay, so. I’m accused ignoring anyone between Waif and Obese, then you’s concerned I’m ignoring normal sized people because I draw…normal sized people?

Also, every fat acceptance page I have been too has all sizes from normal and up. I also see all sizes of people on the page this article concerns. So far as I can see they are not all ‘very large’. I do know I’ve never seen a model of this size in Vogue or Bazaar when they go on and on about “curves”. But that’s just me. Now for once the very large or represented and people start crying about the lack of ‘In betweens’

And no, while I agree that in theory fat acceptance accepts everyone, in practice every time I go to fat acceptance sites like this there ARE no in betweens because ‘in between’ is classified as thin. I was more frustrated that you wouldn’t even acknowledge that simple concept.
Further, “normal size” is relative. You just said yourself, “For once the very large are represented.” Yes, and my point is that “very large” doesn’t equate to “in-between,” thereby demonstrating, in your own paragraph, that there is no place for in-betweens. So now that you’re represented, how about the rest of us? That’s privilege, and that’s what I was addressing, nothing more.
It just seemed like you were arguing with her for being thin, even though you only draw thin people.
I don’t go to fat acceptance pages. I just looked at this one. and I understand what she’s talking about. Even though you don’t. I wanted to help you see what she meant, but oh well.
It’s okay, dottywine! Thanks anyway. The great part is, I’m not “thin.” I can’t even call myself ‘normal’ because apparently that’s insulting now too. The notion that anyone, at a size 4-14, is catered to in any capacity by thin pop culture standards is absurd.
Fat acceptance pages hold no appeal to me either, because they mostly end up being just that – fat acceptance, not body acceptance. (It reminds me of feminist websites that start off nice and accepting of all, but it always ends up being some militant brand of feminism that I just can’t get behind).
There’s no room for moderates on the intarwebz.

I have no problem with Fat Acceptance as long as it incorporates Size Acceptance. I have no problem with Feminism in Fat Acceptance as long as it is not used to exclude people from Fat/Size Acceptance because of their gender.

I’m going to just start a tumblr called, “Acceptance.” Everyone, (even bodiless heads! haha), can submit.
Yeah, I’ve always found the emphasis on “FAT” in “Fat Acceptance” problematic. I realize that the thin have it easier, but there’s still thin people who suffer from the same kind of mockery shit we on the heavy end of the scale suffer from. Same goes, I guess, with every body type. I much prefer “SIZE acceptance” because I feel it represents everyone, and in body politics, everyone needs to be represented.

A fat person’s body, is a body. If a fat person sees themselves as a human being, equal to others, when they say, fat acceptance, they are automatically referrign to the acceptance of all bodies, because the the fat body is currently the most reviled.
It’s not the acceptance of fatness so much as the acceptance of a person and their body that happens to be fat, that matters.
I didn’t think that would have to be spelled out, because I take for granted that fat people are human beings.
In the same way, if a thin person speaks of being happy with themselves and their body, I warm to that, and feel inspired. I don’t need them to point my body type out specifically. I take it as read that it applies to me because I respond to it.
If on the other hand you don’t see fat bodies as representing humanity, then that feeling is less available to you.
Garbage, Jamie. 99.99% of fat acceptance sites are about body acceptance at all sizes – whether you are slim, supersize or inbetween. I have never actually seen these mythological slim-bashing fat acceptance sites – much like I have never seen unicorns, manticores or sphinxes.
Misrepresentation like this really gets my goat.
Having said that, however, in a world where fat people are discriminated against and reviled, where our headless images are used to illustrated moral panic scare stories about obesity, is it any wonder that the images Substantia Jones has chosen to reclaim are the images or larger women. Her choice of subject captures the beauty of fat women, but does not invalidate the beauty of women of other sizes.

I don’t care what size someone is, when I was a size 20, I was proud of my body for what it could accomplish. Worrying about my health pushed me to change my eating and exercise habits and now my body is an 8/10. Does that mean I should feel any less accepting of people smaller or larger than me? NO. I think EVERY SIZE should be accepted.
There is too much of a “Thin is Great” and “Fat is Great” when it should just be “Bodies are Great!”

More than everything else thanks to Substantia Jones! Her work allows us not to feel ugly for once and stimulates each one of us to enjoy life and ourselves.
I feel sorry, instead, for those who can not understand what it means, today, at every latitude, to be obese and how much of a burden their hatred puts on us. Fortunately I read here many more with great ideas and values!

Hey, I just found an interesting article which seems to address the “Why do they always have to be naked?” question. A “plus-size” model recreates a fashion spread (in which no one got naked) and pretty much proves the clothes and the model look just as good in the “plus-size” version.
The comments here are amazing. I never realized there were so many different views on “Fat Acceptance”. Thank you all for enlightening me.
