Just in case you’ve ever wanted evidence that people do more online searches for porn on weekends (especially Friday nights!):

Thanks to Larry.

People wanna relax, jack off, and feel stres-free on the weekends. How do I know? well, uhhh…..
um…..no duh
*singing* The internet is for porn!
Ha! I love that musical!
Googling “porn” is for n00bz.
Note that the news is in the news quite often. Somebody’s a bit self-obsessed.
interestingly, “porn” and “sex” come up as pretty even. And if you do a search that includes “football” you will notice not-so-surprising correlation.

Well done. Similar results when you look at any specific type of porn or sex act (I won’t mention which ones I inserted) – well-defined weekend peaks.
Of course, in light of the recession, here’s another interesting correlation – http://www.google.com/trends?q=porn%2C+jobs&ctab=0&geo=us&geor=all&date=mtd&sort=0
Hahaha, that’s exactly what I was thinking.
But I guess it’s not quite as bad as when people google using entire sentences…
“Alright google, let’s see here…a man and a woman having sexual intercourse doggy style on a couch *enter* YES!”
Seriously, who just Googles “porn”?
I’d expect that people view less porn when they’re at work or school.
Zooming out a bit, the search volume of porn has really taken off in the last 2 years: http://trends.google.com/trends?q=porn&date=all&geo=usa&ctab=0&sort=0&sa=N
Not to extrapolate too much, but the big bump in “porn” searches in spring ’08 – after which they never dipped below their prior peak – neatly coincides with the time the employment rate began an identical trend: http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServlet?request_action=wh&graph_name=LN_cpsbref3
Maybe we have one more way to measure the economy on our…er…hands.
I’d expect that people view less porn when they’re at work or school.
People take NSFW seriously, I’d assume.
Sure, but lots of people do have to work on weekends, and for those with kids, even if they’re off on weekends, they’re more likely to have kids around too, which you’d think might somewhat counteract the “weekend freedom” effect. Maybe?
I wonder if it seems weirder to people to look at porn on a Tuesday night than a Friday night, even if Tuesday and Wednesday are your days off and therefore count as your weekend?
“I wonder if it seems weirder to people to look at porn on a Tuesday night than a Friday night, even if Tuesday and Wednesday are your days off…”
From one guy’s perspective – a definite no. Any time you have the privacy and spare time to watch porn is a time to watch porn. More than anything, this graph shows us when the aggregate volume of spare solo time peaks.
What the graph doesn’t isolate is how extraordinarily popular “porn” is compared to all but two other search terms (Facebook, Youtube), at any time of day or week. That should neatly account for all the variations in schedules and home lives that you mention. But if you have any info showing that MORE people are now working or studying on Saturday than on any given weekday, then you might be on to something.
As for the weekend “kids around” factor, I’d expect it to be cancelled out by the fact that an enormous number of the people looking for porn ARE kids.
Especially when you consider who would google “porn” itself.
But this is just for searches. Who searches for ‘news’? Wouldn’t you search for a channel or some other content provider?
A christmas time post about porn on google trends and no mention of the yearly christmas porn spike?
see it for your self: http://www.google.ca/trends?q=porn

Nice to see no one has questioned the very existence of porn itself.
Well, I do. Porn shouldn’t exist. Full stop.
[...] A little light reading (in the form of charts and maps) for this laid back holiday weekend. In case you didn’t know what to do this Saturday or Sunday, it’s good to know that loads of “other” people are downloading porn! See, it says so right here. [...]
