Dr. Katja M. Guenther, author of “Understanding the Durable Myth of the ‘Irresponsible Pet Owner,'” in the Summer 2023 issue of Contexts, explains that by approaching this myth as a raced, classed, and gendered phenomenon, we can “encourage people to rethink some of their own deeply held assumptions” and the ways these “powerful discourses” exist in realms well beyond determinations about people’s suitability as guardians for companion animals.
